Web Hosting FAQ

Q1: What is Web Hosting?

Web hosting is the process of renting storage space and bandwidth through a hosting provider so that you may publish your web site online. Paid web hosting also includes getting a domain name and not having forced ads displayed on your web site. Web hosting provided by OzeVision is 100% free of ads so that you have full control over what is displayed on your web site.

Q2: What is Virtual Hosting?

Virtual (or shared) web hosting is the most practical way of hosting for vast majority of web sites. What it means is that a web hosting provider will have one or more servers (powerful computers permanently connected to the Internet that run a web server software such as Apache or IIS) that will be running multiple web sites (it will be shared). Unless a web site is extraordinarily busy or requires a lot of bandwidth, this is the least expensive way to get a real web site. OzeVision proudly offers shared hosting using stable Apache web server on Debian Linux.

Q3: What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is a series of letters and numbers followed by TLD (Top Level Domain) which determine the address of your site. This site's domain name is "OzeVision.com", where ".com" is the TLD. Other TLDs are: .net, .org, .info, .us and .biz. You need to register a domain name before your web site becomes available at this address.

A domain name is your identity online. It distinguishes you from the rest. Once yours, as long as you keep on renewing it, no one else may have it. For most domains, the minimum registration duration is one year. Some TLDs such as .us require a minimum of two years.

Q4: How Do I Register a Domain Name?

First of all you will have to make sure that the domain you want is available. This can be accomplished by using something called a WHOIS lookup at sites like Register.com or Whois Source. Once you have made sure that the domain you want is available for registration, you can proceed and register the domain name. Here at OzeVision, we make the whole process simple for you so that you can check for availability and then register without leaving our pages. Unlike some other hosting providers, you actually own your domain name (note: waiting period may apply when transferring domain names).

Q5: What exactly is storage/space and bandwidth/data transfer?

Disk storage/space is the maximum size your web site can be. Every single letter on your web site must be stored somewhere on your hosting provider's server. Each letter is one byte, and a megabyte is approximately one million bytes. HTML pages are usually rather small, but it is the fancy images, scripts, and even databases that can take up large amounts of disk space.

Bandwidth/Data transfer is the amount of data the server will allow your site to send per month. Data transfer is usually measured in gigabytes - billions of bytes.

OzeVision allows you to instantly upgrade your account to next package from Control Panel.

Q6: How do I know how many hits my web site gets?

First, there are a few things by way of terminology that must be explained:

Hits - this refers to the number of "elements" present on your web pages. If one page has ten images on it then viewing that page once adds 11 hits (one page + ten images).

Impressions - the total number of times pages on your web site are viewed (also called page views).

Uniques - the number of users who visited your site, generally based on requests from different IP addresses.

To give you an example: If you visit OzeVision.com, look at three pages and each page has ten images on it, then our stats increase by one unique, three page views and 33 hits.

Q7: What is PHP, ASP and Perl?

These are all acronyms for programming or scripting languages as described below:

PHP - Recursive acronym for PHP Hypertext Pre-processor
ASP - Active Server Pages
Perl - Practical Extraction and Report Language

These languages have their own strenghts and weaknesses. Please use the links above to research more. OzeVision supports PHP and Perl but not ASP.

Q8: What is MySQL, MS SQL, MS Access?

MySQL, MS SQL and MS Access are database systems that can be used to organize your data. OzeVision supports MySQL only.

Q9: What is PayPal?

PayPal is owned by eBay. PayPal lets anyone with a valid email address send money to anyone else with a valid email address.

Every user registers with PayPal and then enters their necessary banking and credit card information. Once registration is completed, your email address is all you need to send and receive money. OzeVision supports PayPal.

Q10: What are sub-domains?

Sub-domains can be considered as an extension of your domain name. For example, if your web site is www.mydomain.com then a sub-domain would be test.mydomain.com and another would be family.mydomain.com. Sub-domains are usually considered as separate sites from the main domain site. OzeVision supports sub-domains.

Q11: What is uptime?

Uptime is the percentage of time that a web site is accessable. For example: OzeVision has uptime garantee of 99.9%, this means that your site may be down for a total of about 44 minutes each month.

Q12: What is the difference between Unix/Linux hosting and Windows hosting?

Your choice of operating system should depend on what features you need. For example, if you are a programmer and already using IIS, ASP, VBScript, Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server or Visual InterDev and you don't have the time to learn Unix-based solutions then you should choose a Windows-based hosting provider. Just because your desktop is Windows-based doesn't mean you should use a Windows-based hosting provider. Linux-based operating systems and Apache Web servers are most common among web hosting providers. This is due to Apache's many shared-hosting features, a good track record of stability and performance. OzeVision hosting is based on Debian Linux.

Q13: Do I need a dedicated IP?

Maybe. There could be some advantages to having a unique (dedicated) IP for your web site. If you ever change servers, you can point your users to a new IP, so they don't have to wait for the domain name change to propagate. With a static IP, it can also be simpler to upload and test your site before transferring the domain name to a new server. Setting up SSL is also much simpler. You may also not want to share your IP with some sites that could lead to your site being banned by search engines or spam lists. OzeVision provides static IP as a service upgrade.

Q14: Is there any way of reducing my bandwidth usage?

The answer in most cases is yes.

The first thing you should try is to optimize the graphics on your web site. Most GIFs look just as good with fewer colors and most JPEGs look just as good with a higher compression level. At download.com you can find image optimizers that let you optimize your graphics.

You should also optimize the HTML of your web site. Make sure you use relative paths, so that images are not downloaded more than once. Remove any extra spacing and when linking to other pages, use relative paths and not absolute paths.

Q15: How do I upload my web site?

The most common way of uploading files to your web site is by using FTP. When you sign up with a hosting provider, you will probably get an FTP account that lets you access files on your web site (usually via ftp.yoursitename.com using your main account name and password). Then you can use Windows or Internet Explorer FTP client or some other software that supports FTP such as WS_FTP or CuteFTP to transfer files from your PC to your web site. If you don't get an FTP account or if you prefer a Web interface, you can use your hosting Control Panel's File Manager instead. Yet another method is to use an SSH or telnet client software, such as SecureCRT or Putty to upload using Zmodem protocol (sz and rz commands). All these methods will work fine, but we recommend using specialized FTP programs as the preferred option because these programs have better user interfaces and support advanced options like changing file permissions and resuming aborted file transfers.

OzeVision supports all three methods, SSH is provided as optional service. Your FTP host name is of the format: yoursitename.com or yoursitename.supremeserverxx.com.

Q16: Can I use JavaScript, Java Applets and Flash on my web site?

Yes. JavaScript, Java Applets and Flash are client-side technologies, so the hosting provider doesn't have to do anything to support or enable them. Any web browser (such as Internet Explorer or Netscape) that supports them is enough. It doesn't matter if Java or Flash are not listed among the hosting plan's features, they are supported by default.

Q17: How much data transfer am I going to need?

You can calculate how much data transfer you are going to need by estimating your average page size (including graphics) and then multiplying it by the number of page views you expect to have per month. For example: with an average page size of 60 KB and 1000 page views per day, you will transfer an average of 1.8 GB per month.

Q18: What if I get a broadband connection and host my web site on my own computer?

Yes, you could do that, but that is not a good idea due to many reasons. Vast majority of ISPs don't allow you to legally use a residential broadband line to host a publically available server. You would have to buy a more expensive professional or business package. Residential broadband lines usually have lower upstream bandwidth than downstream bandwidth, so your site may perform poorly under heavy traffic. Also, residential broadband lines have a much lower reliability than dedicated T1 or better lines. Finally, you wouldn't have the benefit of daily backup, data security, UPS or technical support that a hosting provider like OzeVision can deliver.

Q19: Can I run my own software on my web site?

Yes, you can run scripts in languages such as Perl or PHP. You can also upload compiled programs in C/C++ and run them. Using "cron" from Control Panel enables you to automatically execute programs or scripts at a specific time and date. You can do all this given that your scripts or programs don't adversely effect the performance or stabiltiy of our servers.

Q20: Is there any extra cost involved in hosting a secure web site?

Yes, you'll need to buy dedicated IP from your web site Control Panel. Once you have dedicated IP, you can buy a digital certificate by clicking on "Generate CSR" in the Control Panel or upload your own certificate.
